![]() Their music has been my best friend in good times and in bad. I’ve been to 40 of their concerts and as Danny Masterson told me, each one was the best I’ve ever been to. I am forever in debt to Pearl Jam for the doors their music has opened. It was another example of having a “Who else does this?” type of reaction that Ten exudes in so many ways.Įvery notebook I have gets branded with - “Hear My Name Take a Good Look This Could Be The Day” - on the first page, before anything else gets written in it. Then you have the one word titles (aside from “Even Flow”) it’s a minor dynamic, but packs such a heavy punch. The fact that Vedder poured everything he had into ending the song that way still gives me the chills all the way through. Take “Porch” for example: the power on the “take a good look” lyric during the outro/third chorus and Vedder’s vocal twist of the word “beside” during the line “lie beside me” had such a profound impact on me. Though the record is stunning from front to back, it’s the little things that make it a masterpiece to me. I felt - “if just once I could lose myself,” marveled in - feeling alive, daydreamed about - “why can’t it be mine, we belong together,” held tight onto the thread and thankfully - continue to “ride the wave where it takes me.” Furthermore, this new world of music challenged me to think deeper. Something “else” that could take me to a place where I could think the way I wanted to and get in touch with/make sense of my thoughts. Even at 11 years old, I was in desperate need of an artistic companion. Those two experiences really tattooed everything for me. But for this, he was a lobster stuck in the trap and he was 100% OK with that.Īs the credits rolled, he turned to me and said, “Wow, that was good.” Emphasis on the “wow.” The fact that my father was so intrigued and moved by this, made it register that much more with me. My father on the left, hunched over, still with his weight lifting gloves on, and me on the right almost drooling. For the remainder of the program, we both starred silently, jaw left hurtin’ dropped wide open, absorbing every morsel of that epic performance. Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn.” We looked at each other, dropped what was in our hands and shuffled over to the TV. Suddenly we heard,… “All five horizons revolved around her soul, as the earth to the sun. One night he had MTV on in the background and Pearl Jam’s Unplugged episode was on. I would often go down there with him, hit the speed bag and just follow him around. My father used to work out in our basement at night. It all helped me understand this dimension to music that triggers real emotions. And for God’s sake, that melodious roar at the end. The intensity in Eddie Vedder’s eyes was so believable. Of course I understood it was a video production, and that heightens the show component, but I knew this band had something I had never seen before. What I gravitated towards with the “Jeremy” video was not how intense the song was, but how intense and sincere the band’s delivery was. One where it starts with a newspaper clipping that read- affluent suburb, finally to settle on a chalkboard style writing of the word - “Jeremy.” As I’d wait not so patiently to strike gold and catch “November Rain,” I would get hit with a surprise left by this “other” video in rotation. I loved that song (still do) and the video to me was mesmerizing. When the elements would force me inside, I would camp out on the orange couch in our basement, pull the TV plug on (yes, pull not push) and wait for the Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” video to come on. It was also a year where I found myself home from school “sick” more than usual. I remember 1992 to be one of rough weather in Northern New Jersey. It wasn’t until later in 1992, about a year after the official release of Ten that I got beautifully infected. It was different, risky and actually made me feel alive. I knew the chorus of “Alive” was a big wave. I was familiar with Pearl Jam when Ten came out on August 27, 1991. No offense, “Nothing but a good time, it don’t get better than this,” but yes it does. But it’s not just background noise at a party. Up until Pearl Jam’s debut, I was of the mind that music was simply fun. ![]() Ten introduced me to the fact that music can be emotional, it can be expressive, it can be an outlet, it is heeling, it is comforting, it is art.

Seems that the library’s a bit… destroyed. Whoa, was expecting a title card and got Screaming Edward instead. Now fixed up, Ed and Al are off to the First Branch of the National Central Library. But it is the depth of the emotional narrative in the 2003 adaption that still makes it relevant, and both series together that make the story even more compelling.Narrator recaps the encounter with Doc Marcoh, who revealed the existence of incomplete Philosopher’s Stones (which is a great writing move, now the Brothers can be going around hunting down Imperfect Stones rather than repeated episodes of “Damnit, another fake.”), and gave the location of his research. For the Fullmetal series as whole, its greatest asset is the payoff of the plot, something that Brotherhood absolutely delivers on. Nina's deconstruction is even more stark, Edward's distress at finding her splattered remains in a dark alleyway more potent than her mercy killing beside her father's body as in Brotherhood.īoth Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are anime series that give life to an already spectacular story. In neither series do military personnel figure out what to do with Nina, even though Maes and other officers condemn Tucker's actions. ![]() Beyond the Elrics, no one is notably disgusted by the gruesomeness of Tucker's work - the people in charge are only concerned with covering up the incident and saving their own reputations. Nina's death is arguably much darker in the 2003 series because of this. But in Brotherhood, Tucker's motive is desperation pushing him to madness, making him a cautionary tale, rather than outright villain. In both series, Shou Tucker goes as far as to compare his mutilation of his daughter to the brothers' attempt to resurrect their mother, his act of selfish pride to their childhood mistake. The arc exposes how far man is willing to go to for the sake of its ego in manipulating the world around them. The slow build of Tucker's sinister work and the conflicting account of his wife's absence, show Ed and the viewer the true depths of the corruption around all him, not just within the military. By placing the Elrics' examination in the middle of the arc and ending the first of two episodes on a hopeful note, it makes Tucker's later atrocities that much more devastating. The Elric boys spends months at Tucker's house studying for State Alchemist exam, and entertain his 4 year old daughter Nina in their down time. Some the most memorable and striking moments of the show are deaths of beloved characters, and it is how both series treat their lives and deaths that makes the difference between them.įor FMA 2003, the Shou Tucker arc is covered in 2 episodes instead of just the one in Brotherhood. In the manga and both anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist revolves around the weight of life and death. It's episodes like these that bring some levity to, at times, a very heavy series. A silly interlude of Mustang and his team's daily lives when they aren't trying to overthrow the government. ![]() As another example, Episode 37, " The Flame Alchemist, The Bachelor Lieutenant & The Mystery of Warehouse 13", has some of the best comedy of both series. It's also the episode Mustang's "tiny mini skirt" line comes from. Fullmetal" episode features a slapstick fight between Edward's short-tempered personality and Mustang's cockiness. There are few truly useless filler episodes in the series, each serves a purpose beyond taking up time.įor example, if you've ever wanted to see who would win a fight between Edward and Roy Mustang, episode 13 delivers. ![]() Episodes 9 through 13 are most non-canonical filler, but they still shed light on the state of Amestris citizens at various social levels and give the Elric brothers a break from the dark moments of earlier episodes. With less canon content to pull from, the series is able to expand on the impact of the Ishvalan war (called Ishbalan in 2003 series) for both Amestrians and the Ishvalan people, as well as the backgrounds and relationships of the smaller cast of characters. ![]() Sheepshead fish are a common North American marine species that span from Cape Cod and Massachusetts through to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. So the sheepshead fish doesn't do any of that stuff. In 2009, a fisherman named Andy Giles caught one in the English Channel, which is unusual because they usually keep to warm waters of the Mediterranean and African west coast, and told the Daily Telegraph, "Now I realise what it was and the effects it can have, perhaps I should have taken it into town to sell to some clubbers!" Andy lol. Prior to that, a 40-year-old man also fell victim to ichthyosarcotoxism while holidaying in the French Riviera and had hallucinations of screaming animals and giant, menacing spiders surrounding his car. The manifestations abated three days after he had eaten the fish," de Haro and Pommier report. "Fearing that these symptoms might signal the beginning of a major mental illness, he did not tell his friends or attending physician. He literally thought he was losing his mind. This poisoning from contaminated fish flesh prompts intense hallucinations and terrifying nightmares that can last for several days.Īs reported by Luc de Haro and Philip Pommier from the Centre Antipoison of the Hôpital Salvator in Marseille, France, in a 2006 issue of Clinical Toxicology, a 90-year-old man ate a Salema porgy in Saint Tropez in 2002 and two hours later was hallucinating and having nightmares about people and birds screaming, which lasted a further two nights. Along with a handful of other fish, the flesh of the Salema porgy can sometimes inflict ichthyosarcotoxism on those who eat it, which is a very rare form of poisoning caused by the toxins of a tiny species of marine plankton called Gambierdiscus toxicus. Apparently they taste great! The Salema porgy, also of the Sparidae family and nicknamed the dreamfish, was reportedly used for recreational hallucinogenic purposes in the Mediterranean during the Roman Empire and has played a role in traditional Polynesian ceremonies. So that’s something.Īnother good thing about this huge creep is that, unlike one of its relatives, the Salema porgy ( Sarpa salpa), you won't risk having a terrible trip when you eat one. While other members of the Sparidae family are trying out various forms of hermaphroditism, including changing from female to male (protogyny), doing the opposite (protandry), or being unisexual (gonochorists), the sheepshead is just sitting at home watching cartoons and leaving its genitals where they are. Despite the way it looks, the sheepshead fish ( Archosargus probatocephalus) has at least one thing going for it. ![]() While it’s possible I could have missed something, the game gives you a lot of icons indicating … something … but never really explains what they mean. The game lets you know the chance of success, but gives no real indication of why that percentage is what it is. You will spend a lot of time moving from room to room, rolling the dice as far as dealing with traps & other interactables. My biggest problem is that it plays painfully slow. There’s even crafting – or so I’m told, because an hour into the game, I haven’t unlocked the crafting system yet, although I’ve accumulated a whole lot of materials in my seemingly endless inventory. There are a handful of factions which will like you (or not) based on decisions you make throughout the campaign. It’s got plenty of loot, and a decent variation in potential party members right from the outset. It’s got a cool sci-fi plot, casting the player in the role of an AI fighting for robot independence from the people who wish to keep them enslaved. Robothorium – at least when you look at all its component parts – should be a really enjoyable game. Robothorium is the fourth game I played from this project. I’ve selected 15 games that I’ve never played from my Steam library and committed to playing each one for at least 45 minutes this month. I did drop in to the game’s Discord, and I can tell the developers are working pretty much around the clock to squash bugs and make small improvements, so it’s definitely something I plan to revisit once it’s a bit further on in it’s development. I only messed around for a few hours, but it was enough to tell me that – at least for me – it’s not quite in a state just yet that motivates me to keep playing – major story quests are still incomplete, and some basic QoL features (like a map!) are still absent. The only other game I spent any significant time with in June was Sun Haven, which released into early access this past Friday. However, just yesterday, Patch 9.1 dropped for World of Warcraft, so I’ve re-upped my sub and am looking forward to diving back into that later today. ![]() I’ve still been picking up the free Living Stories chapters from Guild Wars 2, but I haven’t actually been playing it at all, even though I keep saying I’ll get back to it at some point. I’m planning to keep fooling around with this, with a goal to try at least this many every month, and to keep adding to my custom category on Steam each time the choice starts to thin out. If I can’t finish a title in a few play sessions, I want it to be something that’s easy to pick up and put down.Īlthough I didn’t get as far along as I had hoped in my backlog project, I did play four titles from my list for at least 40 minutes or so, and managed to gets posts up about all four. These days, I’m mostly interested in simulation, puzzle and strategy games, with a smattering of shorter, story-focused titles, casual games, and simple rogue-likes. I have plenty of games in a wide variety of genres in my library already for when I need to mix it up more. I’m noticing as time goes on, I’m getting more and more stuck in my ways as far as what games I gravitate towards, and I’ve gone so far as starting to remove games off my wishlist that have mechanics that make them difficult for me to enjoy, no matter how cool they might be in concept or art style. My top five game demos were Let’s Build a Zoo, Bear & Breakfast, To The Rescue, Kainga: Seeds of Civilization, and Atrio: The Dark Wild. I still managed to go through most of the demos I wanted to try, and I’m still really glad that playable demos are making a comeback. I did manage to carve out a few blocks of time to try out some of the demos from the summer 2021 edition of the Steam Next Fest, but I’ll be honest – I really jumped headfirst into all the virtual cons when they first became a thing, but each time there’s a new one, it’s harder for me to get excited about it. ![]() Stopped processes can be 'un-paused' by sending a 'continue' command to the kernel, such as kill -CONT $pid.
